Wisconsin Rep. Scott Fitzgerald Introduces Curriculum Transparency Act

Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Wisconsin Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-05-WI) introduced a Curriculum Review of Teachings (CRT) Transparency Act, along with Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-05-NC). Foxx is the Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader.

The CRT act would essentially require all school districts within the United States to have all of their curriculum open for public perusal. A statement about the act from the Republican Committee on Education and Labor reads, “Lack of awareness and accountability for what is being taught in our schools have allowed controversial and factually inaccurate ideas, like critical race theory, to be taught to students while keeping parents in the dark.”

The proposed wording of the bill reads that the purpose of the bill is “To amend the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to ensure that local educational agencies applying for certain Federal education funds post the curriculum for elementary and secondary schools online, and for other purposes.”

A statement from Fitzgerald said, “Decisions about what to teach students in school are being made by bureaucrats and teachers unions, often without the input from parents. As a result, parents across the country are flocking to their local school board to demand transparency and to oppose dangerous ideologies, like critical race theory.”

Fitzgerald believes that parents should not have to “fight” to be able to see what their children are being taught. He said, “Parents should not have to fight for access to the curriculum their students are learning, especially when the curriculum promotes divisive and backwards theories. My bill, the CRT Transparency Act, will solve this problem by helping parents get a straight answer about what their children are being taught in school.”

Foxx said, “Elementary and secondary education is a collaborative process between teachers and parents. Unfortunately, too many school districts are dissolving this communication, hiding behind an opaque curriculum ripe for left-wing indoctrination. Parents, students, and community members deserve to know what their children are learning.” Foxx and Fitzgerald are both hoping that this act could lead to greater transparency and more trust in the nation’s public school system.

“Knowledge is strength, and the CRT Transparency Act strengthens both educational freedom and school choice by arming parents with the information necessary to choose the school option that works best for their child,” Foxx said.
