More Illegal Aliens Crossed the Border in April Than Any Month in Modern History

by Eric Lendrum

In the month of April, at least 234,088 illegal aliens crossed the border into the United States, smashing all previous records for the highest monthly total of illegal border crossings in modern history.

As reported by the Washington Examiner, the over 234,000 figure comes from successful interceptions by border authorities, and thus does not account for so-called “gotaways” who evaded the Border Patrol. The numbers were reported by a court document obtained by the Examiner on Monday.

With this new monthly total, the full amount of confirmed encounters with illegals at the border since Biden first took office now stands at 2.75 million.

Of the April totals, 32,388 illegals were denied access at various ports of entry. The remaining 201,800 were arrested after crossing the border, either voluntarily surrendering to authorities or being apprehended attempting to escape. The total number of denials at ports of entry was more than three times the amount in the same category in the month of March, which was only about 11,397.

The spike in April was attributed to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war with Russia and heading to Mexico, upon realizing that the southern border was the best method for illegally entering the United States. The Biden Administration has specifically instructed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to allow Ukrainians into the country, even though no other nationality has been given such a pass. Another contributing factor to the surge in illegal immigration was the announcement that Biden would be officially ending Title 42, the public health policy first implemented during the Trump Administration that gave the Border Patrol broad authority to deport any and all illegals due to concerns about spreading the coronavirus.

The previous record high for any given month was in March of 2000, when approximately 220,063 illegals crossed or attempted to cross the border. Although CBP does not have any official data predating 2000 that covers all forms of border crossings or attempted border crossings, the April 2022 total is still most likely the highest monthly total of illegal immigration in history since at least 1924, when the Border Patrol was first formed.
