Flood of Illegal Aliens from Peru Heading to Southern Border

The Biden Administration’s plans to end the Title 42 immigration policy are continuing to result in a spike in illegal aliens preparing to flood the southern border, with the latest wave coming from Peru.

According to the New York Post, over 8,000 Peruvians have been apprehended at the southern border in 2022. In 2021, the number was just under 3,200. In past years, Peruvians have often made up a very small percentage of illegal immigration, as most illegals often come from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The surge may also be attributed to internal factors within Peru, including rising inflation, political instability and corruption, and mass protests. Inflation has reached its highest level in the country since 1998, and the embattled president, Pedro Castillo, has failed to return his own country from Ecuador after two prior attempts by the congress to remove him from office.

“No one knows if Peru is the next Venezuela or Cuba,” said Peruvian activist Andres Urbano. “There’s a high level of distrust with the government, and parents and young people alike see an uncertainty about what their future holds in Peru.”

“You can be assaulted and robbed on the street, including lose your life over a cell phone someone wants to steal from you. Crime is on the rise and police don’t have control over it,” Urbano continued. “Sicarios and organized crime are more and more common. Criminals can buy their freedom even if they’re arrested.”

“Peru is descending into anarchy,” he concluded. “No one knows how it’s going to end.”

The chaos within the country makes the United States seem even more appealing to potential illegals, with the Biden Administration supporting an open-borders policy and promising amnesty for illegals, including taxpayer-funded benefits such as healthcare, education, and housing. As such, Biden has reversed many of President Donald Trump’s successful immigration policies, including building a wall along the border and ending the “Remain in Mexico” policy.

Title 42, a public health policy implemented early into the COVID-19 pandemic, gave border authorities broad authorization to deport illegals out of health concerns. The White House announced that it would be formally ending Title 42 on May 23rd, which has led to widespread backlash from both parties.
