Wisconsin Representative Tiffany Demands ‘Full Membership’ to United Nations for Taiwan

Wisconsin Representative Thomas Tiffany (R-WI-07) wrote a letter to the Biden administration demanding full membership to the United Nations for Taiwan. In a tweet about the letter, Tiffany said, “America doesn’t need a permission slip from Communist China to support our allies.”

Tiffany co-wrote the letter along with Representative Scott Perry (R-PA-10).

The letter addressed to the Honorable Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, said it believed that granting Taiwan admission into the United Nations is the right decision, despite the interference in the decision from China.

The representatives wrote asking that the influence of the United States be used to recognize Taiwan. The letter said, “As the 76th session of the U.N. General Assembly begins, we ask that you use the voice, vote, and influence of the United States to secure Taiwan’s ascension.”

Furthermore, the letter stated that no “logical or cogent argument” could be given for the exclusion of Taiwan from the U.N. for the past 50 years. The letter said that Taiwan is among the top 20 economies worldwide and the United States’ tenth largest trading partner.

The letter argued that “Taiwan is also an international leader in semiconductor manufacturing, and maintains robust ties with prestigious medical research institutions around the world.”

Tiffany and Perry said that their desire would be that Taiwan replaces the People’s Republic of China in the U.N., but recognized that goal is not currently easily achieved. They went on to say that recognizing Taiwan would be the “minimum” that the United States could do.

They wrote, “The minimum that the United States can – and must – do is to ensure that Taiwan is fully invested with the rights, privileges, and responsibilities as a U.N. member state.”

Tiffany and Perry requested a response to their letter by September 14, asking for a plan as to how the United States plans on assisting Taiwan’s “inclusion as a member state.”

They wrote that “the only miscalculation our Nation could make here is failing to support one of our closest allies.”

They went on to say that “If there is any reason or trepidation regarding the consequences of supporting Taiwan, we would be honored to meet with you to ameliorate your concerns.”
