The efforts from concerned Wisconsin parents are growing in an attempt to recall four Mequon-Thiensville School District (MTSD) board members.

The recall election, which will take place of November 2nd, has drawn the attention of many individuals who often do not pay attention to politics, as the recall petition gained more than 17,000 signatures.

According to supporters of the recall, the current school board members have ignored their concerns over Critical Race Theory (CRT) and COVID-19 restrictions that have been placed on students and teachers in the district.

Furthermore, the group argues the district needs to support teachers.

“Our group advocates for improvements in recruiting, hiring, paying and retaining top quality teachers and substitutes. We believe our tax dollars should be allocated towards hiring more quality teachers and less on administrator positions and unnecessary consultants that have no impact on education,” the group said on their website.

However, supporters of the incumbent school board members, who dictate the district’s policies, argue that the recall effort is taking funding away from students, and they note the district has performed well in standardized tests.

“The cost to the City of Mequon for an election such as this is approximately $10-15,000. The School District would pay for cost of this election. A recall requires the reallocation of funds away from the educational experience of our children,” the Coalition to Support MTSD claimed.

“Since the 2016-2017 school year, the district has maintained the percentage of students in Grades K-2 reading at grade level at and around 90%.”

Across the country, parents are becoming involved in school board meetings and recall attempts in record numbers.

In Loudon County, Virginia, school board member Beth Barts resigned amid an ongoing recall effort. The district has been at the center of the debate on Critical Race Theory in the state.
